Spring into fitness with Recreation and Parks

01 September 2024

The Department attracts thousands of participants annually for its Fitness Programme that provides activities such as group aerobics, walking groups and dance – catering to different interests and fitness levels.

The City's Recreation and Parks Department manages 3 571 parks, 13 regional parks, 180 indoor centres and 167 sports fields.

Beyond ensuring access for communities, the department also hosts a series of programmes that cater to different age groups.

The Fitness Programme sees a high participation rate among women, many of whom attend consistently, boosting their fitness levels in the process.

In the past year, participation rates reached nearly 37 000 in fitness programmes, with step aerobics and high-energy dance sessions among the most popular activities.

Natalie February from Eastridge in Mitchells Plain attends the seniors' fitness programme at Tafelsig Community Centre.

She began her fitness journey in 2010 as a way to manage her high cholesterol.

'I find it energising to move and not just sit at home, doing nothing all the time. Fitness is not about age, and we celebrate people of all ages. So come on down and join us,' said February.

Her story is a testament to how these programmes empower individuals to take control of their health, while staying active and engaged in their communities.

'These programmes go beyond improving physical fitness; they also create welcoming spaces for social connection and community building, and positively impact the lives of everyone involved. Women are the backbone of our communities and it's wonderful to see them leading the way in these initiatives.

'As we transition from Women's Month into the 'Spring into Fitness' focus, it's inspiring to witness the dedication and energy these women bring to their workouts, but also their communities. Their commitment not only enhances their own well-being but also sets a powerful example for others to follow,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia Van der Ross.

Whether you are a seasoned fitness enthusiast or just starting your wellness journey, these programmes offer something for everyone.
